Join all your fellow Austin Progressive Potluckers for our annual Holiday Social and Celebration! It's becoming a tradition for the Potluckers to have blow-out party in December, with great food, cool people and lots of merriment. Bring a friend, bring an instrument or music CD, bring your dancing shoes and most importantly, bring yourself on down for this fun and festive event! Bring your singing voice and musical instruments for the music jam.

PLEASE BRING a dish to share with 6-8 hungry people. There are no food restrictions and you're welcome to bring beverages to drink. PLEASE NOTE that you also need to bring your own plates, cups and eating utensils. Amanda Winters is our gracious host and we want to make it as easy on her as possible, so please bring something to eat on and eat with!

  • From I-35: take the Woodland Exit, 232b, (between Riverside and Oltorf--note --this is WoodLAND not WoodWARD Street) Go west on Woodland and pass over many speedbumps and take a left at the stop sign at Eastside Drive, then the first right onto Mary.
  • From Congress Avenue, if headed South from Riverside, take a left heading east on Annie. After several speedbumps, take a right on Newning. Then take a left on Mary and Amanda's house is a few houses down at 509 East Mary

The Network of Spiritual Progressives - Austin Chapter

The Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP) is an interfaith organization open to all who wish to support efforts to build a politics of meaning and a Spiritual/Religious Left. Their mission is to change the bottom line in America from focusing exclusively on the values of profit and power, to one that optimizes the spiritual values of honesty, compassion, and generosity. NSP invites you to be the leader that makes a difference in the world you want to create. You are welcome to attend their monthly meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month (7-9 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4700 Grover Ave). Our thanks to Lola Jones for being such a gracious host and creating the opportunity for us to share her vision for a more peaceful and connected world. Founded in 1995, the Texas Freedom Network (TFN) is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization of more than 23,000 religious and community leaders. Based in Austin, the TFN acts as the state's watchdog, monitoring far-right issues, organizations, money and leaders. TFN advances a mainstream agenda of religious freedom and individual liberties to counter the religious right. The Peace Party

We had a great time in August with our new friends at Helping Austin. Many thanks to our fun and creative host, Amy Stanley, for making it a special evening and sharing with us the valuable contribution that Helping Austin is making to our community (and for the really cute pet rocks!). Be sure to mark your calendars now for this month's potluck, as it is going to be one very cool party!

The Peace Party is a great big party with a great big mission. The Peace Party was created to help promote peace on a non-partisan, grassroots, person to person level, with a focus on inner peace, community and connection. Lola Jones is the founder and host of the Peace Party, and brings her background in helping people through seminars, coaching, speaking, art, and writing, and her ability to open people up to the vastness of who they really are. Lola will give a short talk on the mission behind Peace Party and how to help create peace in the world by having peace within. Donations of $10 will be requested at the door but are not required.

We had a great time, and a great turn out of Potluckers, at our July Potluck hosted by Jogi Bhagat of the group Happy Living with Justice. We had a great time learning yoga, eating, chatting, and going for a dip in Barton Springs afterward. Please bring a freind or two and join us in August where we'll learn about another great Austin group called Helping Austin!

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN the Austin Progressive Potluckers at our August potluck with our hosts, Helping Austin (www.helpingaustin.org). Helping Austin was established to help other local non-profits utilize their assets to raise additional funds instead of relying on government grants. Helping Austin works with the non-profits to help with out of the box thinking on how to better achieve their mission by being self-reliant. Happy Living with Justice

Join the Austin Progressive Potluckers at the July potluck with our hosts, Happy Living with Justice. Happy Living with Justice hosts free yoga classes as an outreach tool to increase our awareness on issues of world peace, justice and environmental issues so that more and more people live a lifestyle in harmony with the welfare of the entire world and also learn about and get actively involved with existing groups, who are working for a just and sustainable world. Happy Living with Justice usually meets at 3:30-5.45 p.m. every Sunday at the Carver branch of Austin Public Library in east Austin. The 90 minute yoga practice is followed by an interactive group meeting to increase awareness on issues of justice with main focus on "what I can do". All are welcome these free, weekly meetings. SPECIAL NOTES: Our hosts will hold a yoga session at the beginning of the potluck at 7:00 p.m. (before eating) so anyone wishing to participate in this free yoga session needs to arrive by 6.55 p.m. and should bring a blanket or yoga mat and wear loose-fitting clothing. The yoga session will take place on the grassy hillside on the north side of the parking lot of Barton Springs Pool (and just east of the Zilker Hillside Theater). Also, there is a free swim at Barton Springs at 9 p.m. so folks interested in taking a dip should bring a swimsuit and towel.

Please bring a dish that serves 6-8 hungry people. PLEASE NOTE that you will need to bring your own plates, cups and utensils and drinks. The only food or drink restriction is that there are no alcoholic beverages, please. Hot Indian Chai (tea) will be provided.

We'll meet and feast at the picnic tables in front of the pool entrance and concession area. Note that there may be a $3 fee to park at Barton Springs.

Literacy Austin

Literacy Austin will host the Austin Progressive Potluckers for our June event. Literacy Austin provides free basic literacy and ESL classes, teaching adults how to read and write. All Literacy Austin tutors/teachers are volunteers. For more information, see:

Full Moon Drum Circle

For our May Potluck, we will be joining the folks at Lucila Dance Productions for their monthly Full Moon Drum Circle. Each month (near the time of the full moon) this group of musicians and dancers get together to celebrate with drumming, dancing and overall merry- making. The April Potluck will be hosted by CASA of Travis County, who's mission is to recruit, screen, professionally train and supervise volunteer advocates to provide 'guardian ad litem' representation for abused and neglected children in the court system. The vision of CASA is to ensure that every child in Travis County lives in a safe, healthy, and nurturing family environment. You'll learn more about the important role they play in our community and how you can get involved. Austin Chapter of The Peace Alliance

The March Potluck will be hosted by the local chapter of a national campaign to establish a cabinet level Department of Peace and Nonviolence in the US Government. The Department of Peace will address violence at its root causes domestically as well as internationally. The national organization has a website at www.thepeacealliance.org During the evening, we'll get to learn more from the local organizers about this groundbreaking grassroots effort taking place across the nation, and the activities happening right here in Austin. Water and tea will be provided. Our host has a special request that some of the Potluckers volunteer to help with the clean up duties so that she is not left with a dirty kitchen!

Continue going east and the street name will change to Northland and then to Koenig. After you cross Burnet Rd., the following intersection with a traffic light is Woodrow. Turn Left on Woodrow. Spiritual Cinema Circle

This month, the Potluckers will be hosted by the Spiritual Cinema Circle (www.spiritualcinemacircle.com), an organization created in 2003 to bring spiritually-relevant, artistic films which rarely make it to the big screen to the general public. This national organization was founded by Stephen Simon and Gay Hendricks has thousands of global members already. Each month a DVD is created with shorts and feature-length films chosen by the Spiritual Cinema staff. In Austin, Karen Thompson opens her house for periodic viewings of some of these short clips and then conducts discussions over a shared potluck meal. During our potluck gathering, there will be a viewing of Spiritual Cinema Circle movies in one room, while another part of the house will be open for general socializing and networking. Casa De Luz

Casa de Luz is a place of gathering for people who are learning how to better integrate their lives and experience more wholeness on all levels. Casa's beautiful campus is home to a wide range of experiences and opportunities to nourish one's mind and body. They are a full educational community center that hosts ongoing classes, guest speakers, live music and provides a meeting place for several of Austin's holistic organizations. At the center of Casa's work is their vision of creating world peace through the awareness of balance as taught within the framework of Macrobiotics and their mission to educate and nourish those traveling through life with a desire to leave things better than they found them.

Join us for this unique opportunity to experience a true oasis for wellness in Austin. We will have a brief presentation by Wayo Longoria about the organizations vision and the important role they play in the community. We will also have an opportunity to sample some of the delicious Macrobiotic culinary delights prepared at Casa.
